An even easier solution for this:

File modified but not rescanned – will try again later

…seems to be to temporarily replace the problematic “case only rename” character with some completely different intermediate character (e.g. with a number), wait a minute, and then replace that intermediate character by the desired character and case again.

This just worked here, and had only to be done on one end of Sync, without even stopping syncing.
