Web browsing / DNS stalls completely during active TCP LAN sync (Debian & Pixel 8)

Issue

Whenever Syncthing is actively transferring files (such as an Obsidian vault or media/backup folders), web browsing completely stalls across the device/network. Web pages fail to resolve or time out.

The moment I pause the peers on either device, web browsing immediately returns to normal.

Environment

Device A (Host): Debian GNU/Linux 13 (trixie) x86_64, Syncthing v2.1.2
Device B (Client): Google Pixel 8, Syncthing Android App
Network: Local Wi-Fi (Router at 192.168.0.1), both devices assigned static local IPs
Connection Type: Direct TCP LAN (tcp4://192.168.0.229:22000, connection.lan = true)

Steps I have taken

Forced Direct TCP LAN: Confirmed that connection is purely direct local TCP (tcp4://192.168.0.229:22000) with relays disabled, ruling out WAN relay latency.
Ping & Connectivity: Running a ping between the Debian host and Pixel 8 during the stall shows stable ICMP replies (~10–70 ms) with 0% packet loss, so basic LAN routing remains active. Firewall (UFW) on the Debian host is disabled.
Internal Rate Limiting: I tried setting incoming and outgoing speed limits within Syncthing’s settings. While this successfully reduced bandwidth consumption and slowed the sync to a crawl, the web loading failure persisted unchanged.
Environment Check: No VPNs, local ad-blocking proxies, or custom DNS wrappers are active on the Pixel 8.

This is not the comprehensive list of things I have tried. I really spent hours hacking and trying things out.

Any suggestions or diagnostic steps would be greatly appreciated!

What router are you using specifically? Is it something decent?

I use this router: Play BOX NET router HFC | Play.

Before switching to BasicSync and Pixel 8 from Pixel 5 and the deprecated syncthing android fork at version 1.2 everything worked on this network.

This is insane! I can’t even send 6 kB of logs to my phone. I have to pause on both peers not just one peer for my network to work again.

Important note: the WiFi on my phone works fine, it’s just my laptop that completely halts.

Can you show screenshots of the Syncthing web GUI from both sides? On Android, you can access the web GUI from the left slide-out menu. Before taking the screenshots, olease unfold the information under the relevant remote device.

Hello again after the experiment.

When connected via Ethernet cable, I could load a YouTube video and sync a few GBs within a minute. When I disconnected it, the YouTube video could not refresh until some files stopped syncing. When both devices are connected but there is nothing syncing, I can use the internet just fine.

P.S Unfortunately, I cannot use an Ethernet cable permanently because it’s far from my computer and I don’t have a routing for it.

My laptop is Thinkpad T14 Gen 1 Ryzen 7. I have had this laptop for a while and syncthing worked perfectly fine. I’m 99% sure it’s a software issue.

When my phone downloads something, it can still use internet with high-speed. When my laptop downloads something from the phone, it cannot.

This is a bizarre thing. Syncthing effectively just opens a couple of TCP connections.

Agree this is really weird. There’s plenty of bandwidth available. And syncthing isn’t using any kind of low level network magic that should break stuff.

Is it plausible that syncthing is not at fault but my Debian Linux is?

Edit: I did check ping and connectivity between devices, so I don’t know. Maybe it’s the BasicSync fork for android? Ever since I switched to it this happens (though I changed phones at exactly the same time).

I would check dmesg on the Debian box to see if something in the network stack goes haywire during a sync. The other thing to verify is that there’s no insane amount of connections open or stuck on the system (for whatever reason) i.e. using ss -s.
