Syncthing has been my faithful companion for years, keeping data synchronized between computers and smartphones. I’ve gladly donated to it several times.
Unfortunately, the Android app has been discontinued. I’m aware that a forked version is available. This doesn’t represent a reliable solution for me, as it’s not affiliated with the Syncthing project. This isn’t a criticism of the developer of the forked version.
I also understand that deploying it for multiple platforms is very complex. So, unfortunately, I have to switch to a commercial product and know that I’ll miss the Android version of Syncthing for a long time to come.
All the best. Thank you for your work and your support for Ukraine!
Please take into account that while Syncthing Fork isn’t part of the main Syncthing project, it is still recommended on the official site at https://syncthing.net/downloads. It wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t considered reliable.
When I discovered Syncthing, the main reason for using it was that it was available for Android. This gave me the Synchronization-”Rolls-Royce” over my Windows and Android systems. When I recently reinstalled my Android system, I noticed that the Android version was no longer supported. I had seen two alternatives recommended. But in the forum posts, the Syncthing-Team makes it clear that this has nothing to do with them, also to avoid any misunderstandings. They have simply decided to stop developing for Android, which I respect.
But based on my experience that forked versions sometimes cannot be sufficiently maintained or developed, and that I would have reinstalled everything anyway with the new version 2.0.2, the time had come to address the fundamental question. Also, using emulators is not a solution in my case, as my setup is not particularly extensive.
So, it’s goodbye. I also wanted to pay tribute to the Syncthing-Team for standing on the side of the Ukrainian people, who are subjected to the most brutal war crimes every day.
I am a very happy Syncthing-fork user here and with all respect to the original Syncthing team and all their work, I very much hope that Syncthing-fork will continue with the best intentions of an Open Source app.
Fork is often part of evolution and I see the Syncthing-fork developer in a close working relationship with the Syncthing project and its goals.
