State of SD cards on Android 14?

I have stumbled across several posts about problems with SD cards on Android. Most of them are old, but the official wiki has not been updated since 2020 and the answer to the question is unclear.

I am using LineageOS 21 which is basically Android 14. Please let me know what the current state of SD card support is.

My conception, quite simply, is to store my photos on it and sync them to my computer. I’d like to have read/write access on both devices enabled — I basically expect a similar experience as with cloud-based solutions.

SD Card access is supported on Android 11 and newer. You will need to enable the “all files access” permission for the Syncthing app in the OS settings. The app should prompt you to do it on the first run.

Please keep in mind that Android still restricts access to some internal paths, e.g. Android/data (both on internal and external storage).

Just a sidenote, but this is not the official wiki. The link is for Syncthing Fork while the official app is at https://github.com/syncthing/syncthing-android.

And the relevant official app FAQ entry: Frequently Asked Questions · syncthing/syncthing-android Wiki · GitHub

(I expected it to be at least as outdated, but it actually seems pretty relevant/correct to my knowledge.)
