I found this command line procedure.
In the second set of numbered steps, #4 says I’ll need to tell Syncthing my win device name and device ID.
This seems to say that the latter is the serial number of the machine. Is that correct? It needs the serial number??
Following another page, I went to win settings and searched for “device specifications”. It shows a list
- Device name
- processor
- installed ram
- device id
- product id
- and others
Is the 4th one what it wants?
List item
No, the two are unrelated. “Device ID” is a term used by syncthing to describe a cryptographic identifier generated on the first install/run. If you have syncthing running, the web interface displays the Device ID of the running device in various places, for example Actions → Show ID or alternatively This Device - Identification (click on it to show the full ID).
In syncthing, you only need the device ID when adding a remote device - the Add Device dialog asks about it. It has no relevance to the local device you’re setting up.
Perhaps the official getting started guide is more helpful to you. After you’ve started syncthing for the first time, the configuration is pretty much the same for all platforms.
So install on both machines first to get the ids. Thanks. I hope so.
