so maybe there is a way to set the method used to compare file. I don’t know where to find these setttings…
There’s a lot of info that could be helpful:
- What OS are you using on each Device?
- Did you move the Syncthing home directory to the new Device? Did you bring its configuration file and database?
- How many Folders are you using? Of what type?
- How are you connecting?
- What makes you think that Syncthing wants to overwrite something?
I’m using Xubuntu on a laptop and Lineage OS on my phone
yes I moved the home directory while bringing along its configuration file and database…
Just one folder send and receive
The laptop is connected to the phone configured as a hot spot
There is a line that says 68756 items 79go to be synchronised and when I click on it a window displays a list.
About your questions of the 2nd point, when it looked like everything was going to be overwrite, I paused and stopped sharing the folder because, as your questions also revealed it, all this seemed messy. I wanted to simulate two devices that have the same content but have never been synced. So I moved away all the configuration files on each device, create a new folder on the laptop, and re-install syncthing on the phone to share this new folder on a “new device”, but same result. Damned, how did syncthing find out I was trying to fool him ?
If I understand you correctly: You have reinstalled Syncthing on your phone, and there are 79 items to go to be synchronized. Is that right? Have things changed since you wrote that?
Syncthing’s Device ID is part of the configuration. As a rule, I recommend against syncing Syncthing’s home directory (where it keeps the configuration file by default) or its configuration, database, or other files.
If you didn’t do this previously and things aren’t working the way you want them to, I would start by removing the Syncthing app and all of its files (NOT the files you want to sync!), rebooting, and starting by installing Syncthing from scratch, and configuring it from scratch.
I tried different ways of sharing while monitoring thoroughly the syncthing’s window. I was probably wrong when, clicking on “recently changes”, I considered that the files listed are transferred thus overwrote. This list just displays the local changes ; though it is under the “remote devices” section it doesn’t concern what happen within the remote device. Am I right ?
Actually the lines “download rate” and “upload rate” are still confusing me. When I make surely a transfer of a big file, there are two values, one for the debit and one for the volume in parentheses, but this last one doesn’t match with the volume transferred.
Recent Changes shows the changes that your local Syncthing instance is aware of, no matter where they originated.
Download Rate and Upload Rate show the total transferred since Syncthing started in parentheses. I can think of a number of reasons why they would differ between peers – for example, in my Syncthing setup, one of the machines has been rebooted more recently than the other.
