Reinstalling OS — best practice for Syncthing and external HDD folder?

Hello — I’m currently using Syncthing on Linux and my synced files are stored on an external HDD. I’m planning to reinstall Linux and want to copy my Syncthing configuration. After reinstalling, should I point Syncthing to the same directory on the external HDD as the folder it was syncing before, or is it better to set a new directory and let my other synced devices copy the files to the new location?

Since the files are external, I’d just keep the config & database intact.
