Redundant folder and default Ignores; bug?

How I broke my Synology Syncthing on a DS216j running DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 7.

  1. Had Ignore patterns for each folder
  2. Thought “It’s simpler to put them in Settings’ Edit Folder Defaults.”

Did so on PCs but emptied all folders’ Ignore patterns first: Everything works fine.

Did so without emptying all folders’ Ignore patterns on Synology:

Effects and foolish next steps:

  1. Can no longer reach the folders’ Ignore patterns option; the page opens but never fills.
  2. Refreshed the browser page.
  3. Can no longer reach the Folders/This Device/Remote Devices page; error message is “Unable to connect”.
  4. This is my status quo, except that syncing continues operating.

Went to Syncthing in Package Center

  1. When I clicked on Syncthing icon the resulting page has no icon. Also, the “Other Information” is not populated except Developer and Publisher.
  2. Install button (and option to its right) is showing
  3. Pressed that Install button, but nothing happened
  4. Choose Repair, Update, Cancel, Install, Open, and Auto-update, nothing happened and the option box remained open for other choices.
  5. Choose Run and Uninstall, option box closed but still said “Install”

Syncing is working perfectly and continues to do so through the “Tried” below. Tried:

  1. Removing the .signore files for each of the Synology directories. No effect.
  2. Waited a few hours. No effect.
  3. Unplugged, waited, replugged the Synology machine. No effect.
  4. Replace the .signore files. No effect.

The only thing I can think of to fix this is to manually remove the Syncthing package. I’ve read instructions on line for doing this via SSH and Scheduled Tasks. But I don’t want to do so without trying for advice or other help. I know this forum isn’t the right place to find such help, but I suspect that my problem is an underlying Syncthing bug that I don’t want to test for on my PC. Regardless, it’s a good “Don’t do it!” story.

Unfortunately no, because default patterns just mean they will be applied to the folder when a new folder is created. Per-folder ignore patterns are still the only patterns that have effect.

Thank you Jakob, that makes complete sense. To make sure I did the same on my PC as I did on the Synology; there were no ill effects and everything worked the same afterwards as before.

So whatever happened to me is just affecting the Synology version. I will prepare a bug report for them before I work to undo whatever happened.
