Moved harddrive to new computer - now Syncthing confused

Hi!

I’ve been using syncthing on a computer, (arch linux), with /home on a separate physical drive.

I had to move to a new computer, I installed Debian on it, and am using the same hard drive to mount my /home folder on, however, when I start syncthing now, it seems to have reset, and is just offering to sync the default (~/Sync) folder.

  1. Can I some how reverse this, and get back the old database?
  2. Any idea what went wrong? How aught I have done it?
  3. If not, should I add all folders again, but when I sync to my backup computer, that has older copies, will syncthing recognize the copy on the new machine are the new ones?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Welcome here @penguin !

  1. Yes, but you need to find out where the database AND config etc were on the previous computer. But fear not. Read on!
  2. Don’t know…
  3. Yes! On your other devices, share the folders with the new computer. Syncthing will do a merge of what’s on the other devices and the new computer. If you are unsure, you can configure the shares on the new computer as “Receive Only” to begin with.

Thanks I’ll have to give that a try.

Not sure if Arch Linux stores the syncthing config somewhere else? When I on debian run: syncthing -paths:

Configuration file: /home/me/.config/syncthing/config.xml Database directory: /home/me/.config/syncthing/index-v0.14.0.db

Also, this might be an issue with syncthing on the original (Arch) computer probably being of higher version than on the new (Debian) computer.

Food for thought.

Yes, that is a problem. I think you are best off just starting from scratch on the new computer. You have the files on other devices, so just share from there and you should be fine.

Good luck!
