Have seen this on other forums in the past. Not sure the best way but approving a member’s posts until they have a few published posts may be a good preventative action.
Thanks for cleaning up. I know it’s a major pain.
This was the largest spam attack I’ve seen on the forum so far. Some of the posts were caught by our filters, but quite a few others slipped through, and I’m wondering why, because at least some of their content had in fact been already included in the filters
.
I think the problem with approving every new user is that currently, there doesn’t seem to be any way to get email notifications about that, so in my case, I have to explicitly visit the forum and log in in order to see them (which I normally don’t do, as I follow the forum via RSS).
Yeah I understand it s a tough problem.
If it helps at all the spammer was posting single line posts with mostly gibberish title and content but only a few words. Then a moment later they edited the post, edited the title and pasted all the garbage.
so maybe the first small post got past the spam filter and the edit wasn’t checked.
Anyway sorry you guys have to deal with such bullshit. And thanks
Yeah, that could very well be the case, but then it’s also not good, because it means that the filters can be very easily circumvented
.
I know for sure that there are spammers who hide spam links in their seemingly legitimate posts (likely generated by AI) by editing them at a later time. Those are very difficult to catch, as there are no forum notifications for posts edits.
Yeah. Tough to handle every case..
I was watching for 20 minute or so as this poster was creating a new account and then posting the one liner and then editing it. I tried to flag them all for you guys and sometimes while I was flagging the post changed when the edit was posted.
They did 3–4 posts over 1-2 minutes. Then stopped for 3-4 minutes and then another 3-4 posts.
interestingly one of the posts I think the edit didn’t go through because it stayed the one liner at least for a while before I figured I couldn’t help anymore and went on to other things.
Anyway thanks again for the work you guys do on the application and also the forum.
