There are a few pieces of software that truly feel miraculous. That are, truly, a gift to humanity.
Syncthing is one of them.
I’ve just configured it on my friend’s Mac and QNAP, so that I can create an on-site backup to a Synology![1]
And now I’m sitting 700kms away and thanks to another miracle of modern software – Tailscale – I’ve got these consoles up in a web browser and I’m watching data get moved around.
I use Syncthing myself for a whole bunch of other stuff. It truly is a joy.
I have a little business and one of the things we want to do as soon as we can afford it is give 1% not to plant trees or whatever, but to our favourite indie/FOSS softwares. Syncthing is at the very top of the list.
Thank you.
I didn’t bother installing it on the Synology. It’s an older unit so will be under-powered, and the Docker image looked too hard. The Mac just maps the Synology as a drive and has it as a Syncthing target. ↩︎
