google photos and videos

Hi! MS surface pro or android. PLEASE HELP! Can someone explain to me really at kindergarten level how to take my google photos and videos and get them in the best format transferred since I am out of storage? I started the take out but then realized that the format is not as good when I do that. I was going to save to one drive since I have so much storage there. I don’t even know where to begin!! If I can also find out how to set up to automatically sync everything (photos and videos) at certain intervals and keep it organized?? I do like that in google photos I can search by name or thing or description but I guess I will lose that. THANK YOU!!

I downloaded the app and it asks to allow to manage all files. I’m afraid of what this means and if I should click yes on that. will this be cloud because my phone does not have much storage. please and ty so much to anyone that can help.

Welcome here @susanne !

It seems to me that you have two separate hills to climb, and I recommend that you do that in separate steps in this order: First getting to know Syncthing and then switching from Google Drive to using Syncthing. The focus here is obviously on Syncthing.

If you haven’t already, I suggest you read Getting Started — Syncthing documentation . Get yourself familiar with Syncthing and start using it for a smaller set of example files.

Which app from where? This matters because there are some alternatives.

Syncthing needs access to your files to sync them. This question is a standard question by Android when you install an app such as for example Syncthing.

Yes, if you want Syncthing to work you need to click yes.

I think this is the crucial part: You need to learn the basic concepts of Syncthing. It synchronizes the foldera you tell it to. If your device is low on storage, you need to prioritize what to have on your device. This is something which I believe it very hard in a forum like this. It is better done together with a “tech-savvy” friend of yours in person.

Good luck and don’t hesitate to follow up with more specific questions.

Thank you for your reply. I downloaded the syncthing app. I’m not sure I need it to manage all files…I’m trying to use it for pics and videos. will it ask me what files at some point? I have a lot of storage in my business one drive but I don’t want to lose quality of pics. So are you saying that syncthing will use my phone storage…not the cloud?
Thank you

And do you want to be my friend? because right now I don’t have any tech savy friends

Honestly, it doesn’t sound like Syncthing is the solution you want. This is because Syncthing stores all files locally, meaning that you do need to have enough disk space to fit them.

Otherwise, if you have a desktop computer, you could simply buy an internal or external disk and increase your storage that way. Then, you could move the photos and videos there, leaving only the essentials on the phone.

+1 to what @tomasz86 wrote.

Exactly. Syncthing is synching files between your devices. There is no cloud involved.

That is OK, but if you want to use Syncthing you need to give it permission to access and edit your local storage / files.

Yes. A folder will be synched only of you have explicitly configured Syncthing to sync it.

Thank you for your help. I think you are right that I need to use an external hard drive or my space in one drive. I was hoping this would be an option. I a still looking to find the way that keeps my pics in the best resolution like google.
