FreeFileSync - just one tool to locate sync issues

Like a lot of you, I get the odd sync issue. One tool that I found to be really helpful in solving the issue is to use FreeFileSync ( free ). I don’t always use FFS to get things back on track but it could work depending on the issue. I just run Compare and see what files or folders are different from one device to the other and then I usually correct the problem with File Explorer. It’s super fast and extremely helpful.

Yes, I use FreeFileSync a lot and it is a great tool for things like this, but its not always convenient to compare two systems that are only reachable over the tunnels that Syncthing creates!

I connect to my brother’s NAS remotely with Tailscale and used to use FFS to sync files with him so that might help in some remote situations.

interesting… how can I run that tool?

Just go to the FreeFileSync web site and download the app. It’s pretty intuitive. On the app’s screen browse to the two folders that you want to compare and then hit the Compare icon. Depending on how many folders and files are in those folders, it might take a while but generally I find that it’s quite quick. Also, click on the Funnel icon for settings that you might want to use. I use this to sync folders that I don’t already sync with SyncThing. For SynchThing sync’d folders, I just use it as a tool to help find problems. For example, if after running Compare, a file appears on the left but not on the right, then something is out of sync.

thanks. I thought it was a syncthing command. I did find they published version 13.7 for Debian … It’s in the Debian Stable repositories… a super safe vetted source.

Interesting tool.
