Folder Loss : how to know what happened ?

Hi,

A couple of days ago I lost a folder, it has completely disappeared from my computer and never gets to my phone.

I have a two-way sync between one folder on my computer (/phone-oneplus) and another one on my phone (/my-oneplus).

I just took a folder from my computer with wallpapers in it, dropped it into /phone-oneplus (on the computer), and expected to find it into /my-oneplus (on the phone). But it never gets there and doesn’t exist anymore on my computer.

1/ I know it’s possible to mess up sync without care, but i don’t understand how this issue is possible thou. Do you know what I could have done not right ?

2/ Is there anyway to know what happened ?

3/ How can I avoid such an issue later ?

Thx for your help.

I don’t think Syncthing would ever delete root folder you are syncing, so I suspect you need to look for blame somewhere else.

Also, keeping stuff at the root of the filesystem is not very smart, as the OS thinks it owns that, and it’s really easy to fat finger something and affect things there.

Sorry, bad typo. The folders I sync are well in /home directory.

The actual path are

  • /home/phone-op1
  • /home/phone-op6
  • /home/tab-sam5

On each of these devices I have a personal folder named with the same pattern

  • /_my-op1
  • /_my-op6
  • /_my-sam5

Each of these folder is in sync with his “twin-folder” on my computer, and it runs smoothly for a while.

Here my attempt was to

  1. move /home/pictures/wallpapers/spacestuffs
  2. into /home/phone-op6
  3. in order to sync it with /_my-op6

I’m sure Syncthing is not to blame, but I still don’t understand how this folder could have vanished. I don’t find it in any trash/bin, I don’t find it on my other devices, and unfortunately the logs don’t show that moment anymore (seems like I have 24h of logs only).

The only thing that was different this time is that the new element to sync came from the computer.

Syncthing does not delete root folders, so I’m almost certain its not syncthings fault. What caused I can’t say, but given you were moving things around, I’d start looking there.
