Folder counter is showing random big numbers

Hello. I’m using syncthing for mirroring my data from Synology to UnRaid with easy ignoring pattern (**Original**) for everything in the folder named Original. Unraid is only a backup, no other file operations are done on it. Synology is the master handling the data.

Sync is working pretty fine, but the statistics is going crazy. I tried delete configs, reinstall and usual stuff to avoid it. Currently I have a fresh new installation.

Step 1: Adding in Synology 1 folder, 1 subfolder with 1 file to share. Counter showing 1 file, 2 folders. Correct

Step 2: Adding 1 subfolder, several files in it. Counter showing several files, 3 folders. Correct

Step 3: Adding 1 subfolder, several files in it. Counter showing several files, 104 folders !!! CRAZY

Step 4: Deleting subfolder from Step 3: Counter going back to several files, 98 folders. WHAT?

Step 5: Deleting all subfolders from Step 1 and 2: counter going back to 0 files, 1 folder (the main one). But the sync to Unraid is taking ages, just to delete those 104 “fake” folders, or what is it.

Step 6: Repeat Step3 - Counter showing several files, 1 folder. CORRECT !!! (This is saying me, there’s nothing bad with the data I’m trying to sync)

I can repeat that many times, different combinations. The counter of folders is just messing up and randomly increasing. As a bonus, it’s slowing down the whole sync process.

I did even a load test. Approx 50 folders up to 100GB of data. At the end I had syncthing reporting more than 1500 folders.

Any ideas? Any proposals?

Welcome here @PavolG !

First, if it is possible for you as new user to edit your original post, could you please reformat a bit by doing a numbered list?

I think that screenshots from both ends would help us all.

Maybe I am staying the obvious, but remember this: A synchronized copy is is itself not a backup. Consider ransomware which encrypted files on the Synology. The encrypted files are immediately synchronized to UnRaid and BOOM, all your files are toast.

Weird, I was writing the post as formatted numbered list… And it’s gone in 1-line mess :frowning: No option to edit in my case.

Synced copy is not a backup. Synced copy enabled once in a time, when the source is valid is fine for my case. But this is not solving my topic.

After some googling, maybe the reason is in hidden files and thumbnails generated by synology machine, which is stored together with the normal data I want to sync. Weird, that syncthing is calculating them and even trying to process.

If there are files in the directory you are sharing, they will be processed by Syncthing even if they are hidden. There is nothing strange with that.

A this point, please let us know if there is still some problem left. If so please describe it thoroughly and preferably provide screenshots as well.
