Failure to Sync between Linux and Windows

Hi there!

So I have problem, I am trying to sync up a folder for a project that a colleague and I have going on and am unable to do so.

I get this error every time I try to sync a folder -

2026-06-11 15:40:22:Failed to verify encryption consistency (folder.label=TEST_WIDOW folder.id=hue2n-gduyb folder.type=sendreceive device=TLWVAPJ error=“remote expects to exchange encrypted data, but is configured for plain data” log.pkg=model)

Now I suspect this is due to Windows encryption and I am on Linux with a EXT4 file system, however I could be wrong.

Also really weird is the remote device, my colleague, is always disconnecting when trying to sync, as soon as I pause the folder, they come back and says Up To Date.

I can provide screenshots, or a Support Bundle if required.

Thanks in advance for any help sent this way

You have put a password in the sharing box next to the other device in the syncthing configuration.

one side knows the password and is trying to send encrypted data but the other side is expecting unencrypted data.

Of course all transfers are encrypted but additionally by providing a password on one side you are saying “I don’t trust the other side”

if you trust both sides I would recommend removing the folder from the syncthing instance on both sides and adding it again. But don’t put any passwords in.

My end is Send and Receive,it is my folder I am trying to share, and does not have a password. We tried both ways actually, I shared a folder and he shared a folder but both ended up with the same result. He says on his end when he was sharing he did not set a password. Even showed me a screenshot of his end and it was “Send and Receive”.

We have both added and removed folders to share several times as well trying to debug this issue.

We are doing a small animation project and I used Syncthing before with no problems but that was between a Ubuntu system and a Windows 7 system and on a local network, so I’m at a loss now at what the problem may be.

Another problem is he is on the other side of the planet so while I am awake he is sleeping, and vice versa so real time comms can be few and far between, we do trust each other enough to get this going but I understand the security risks with sharing a folder with someone you have not physically met.

On that note I will wait for his return to Discord and hope that we can continue to work this issue out.
