Does metadata compression help speed up transfer of small files?

If we disregard the network speed, CPU speed, purely for syncing 1000s of small files (say thumbnails) is there difference between no compression vs. metadata only compression?

The effect of metadata compression is to make index transfers smaller over the network. If you disregard the network, it won’t have an effect on anything. It won’t be the bottleneck for small files.
