Does anyone know why syncthing-fork is no longer available on Github?

Hi!

https://github.com/Catfriend1/syncthing-android is giving a 404, and catfriend1’s public profile is hidden and not accepting messages.

Does anyone know what the reason is for it no longer being on github?

I don’t know for sure, but probably another repository reset in progress by @Catfriend1.

Is that something that regularly happen?

In 2025, yes this has happened relatively frequently (3 times that I can count). Within all time, I don’t think so.

Cool, thanks, let’s hope it’s the same this time and it will come back! Was just building my infra around it

Do you recall how long it was down during those times? Not trying to rush anything at all, just trying to plan. I’m also trying to set up for syncing for handhelds and save files.

@marbens Do you know what these “resets” are? Seems strange.

There was a temporary similar “outage” back in July with rewritten history, apparently something inappropriate was recorded in the repo history they wanted cleaned out. The repo came back after that. I have no idea if this is the same thing, or if they just got tired of maintaining it. Could be an opportunity for someone else to step up with a mirror, if they wished to. (Maintaining open source software is a largely thankless chore, FYI  )

Came to ask the same thing, man I hope they didn’t just take it down, and it’s just an outage, saw many open source apps taken down, so am a bit scared, I hope they atleast archive it so someone else can continue it!

There is a forked copy at https://github.com/nel0x/syncthing-android (by @nel0x who’s responsible for Google Play releases of the app). It was archived on November 8 though, so I’m not sure what the actual situation is. You can still get the code from there if you’ve got a need for it.

FWIW It is possible to run Syncthing via Termux–it’s not as integrated but it runs fine.

This archived version was just a fork I coincidentally created last week for private purposes. The GPlay repository is (& will stay) available at GitHub - nel0x/syncthing-android-gplay: Google Play release of: Syncthing-Fork. A Syncthing Wrapper for Android.

Are you now, or perhaps already before, the maintainer of that app?

So far I’ve really only been maintaining the GPlay version, all the Android-wrapper features are Catfriend1’s work.

I’m interested in contributing more but l really hope (and imagine) their repo will come back online again.

It would have been nice if this was communicated upfront and the fact that it wasn’t let’s me wonder whether the deletion was intentional.

Fingers crossed they are OK and nothing serious is going on in their life.

Also hope that the repo was not hacked / taken over.

if for some reason they don’t come back, there was a small update a few days ago (2.0.11.2) that your repo doesn’t have. If that’s needed, the source tarball can be found on f-droid: https://f-droid.org/packages/com.github.catfriend1.syncthingfork/#latest

FWIW I had a look over the diff, and there’s nothing suspect between 2.0.11.1 and 2.0.11.2. So if it happens to be a situation of their account being compromised, it doesn’t look like anything malicious was added in this final release.

Looks like (underfunded) Liberapay donation page was put down too :sad_but_relieved_face:

Perhaps @Catfriend1 would like to comment on this?

Hope this isn’t an account breach or worse. Did the battery consumption issue get worse because of something nefarious going one with the fork. Though I’ve been running devices with both the last release of Syncthing android 2024 and the fork without issue. The constant Repo resets this years is also fishy.
