Deleting past versions of select files and folders while leaving versioning active

Can I delete specific files or folders in the .stversions folder while leaving the staggered file versioning option active without messing up things?

I saw this here, but I wanted to ask explicitly.

The reason is that I accidentally created a huge mass of files in a single folder that I don’t need, but I want to keep the general setup in place.

You can delete what you want from the versioning directory without repercussions. Syncthing doesn’t provide a UI for it, though.
