created empty .stfolder to fix missing marker

Continuing the discussion from How to resolve " folder marker missing" error:

or you created said folder “.stfolder” manually, which would also work.

I created an empty .stfolder in the directory that had the missing marker and local and global states of my peers match now.

The folder is empty, and it works, so it makes me wonder what other than backups is stored there. It must be important, since its lack makes synchronization go haywire?
