Can I change a device name (but continue using the same device ID) and what are the ramifications of doing this in the Web Console on a Windows machine? I don’t want to break any connections with existing peers in doing so.
The device name is just a label: it doesn’t affect anything or anyone. Feel free to change it.
If you change the name of the current device, it will not affect any of the other devices (there you will still be under the old name). Only newly added devices will know you with that name.
If you change the name of a remote device, the change will only be visible in the current web ui, nowhere else.
This is correct. Tried removing the name of the local server and the device name became a truncated part of the Device ID; changed the name and it only changed on my end. Looks like everything continued to work.
