An interesting tidbit about Google restricting all file access permissions on Android

Many people are using Nextcloud to build their own private cloud storage. Previously, both the app and Syncthing had difficulty synchronizing files due to Google’s restrictions on access to all files. For restricted applications, we have to manually set each access path or manually select each image, which makes it very difficult to synchronize multiple paths.

After Nextcloud published a stern blog, Google finally agreed to open access to all files to Nextcloud’s Android app, which is an exciting victory.

Obviously, Syncthing/Syncthing-Fork’s file access on Android is still restricted by Google, maybe we should do something together. This is a good start for both users and developers.

Current state is, nel0x got the approval for all files access at play store after I transferred the app over. But I don’t expect approvals to keep smoothly going on, driven by my past experiences. I suddenly got the permission revoked as soon a new major Android version came out. Sometimes reinstated fast, and another time no luck in retrying, appeal, answer in writing for several months.

I suppose that’s what happens when you replace proper support staff with automated systems and provide no means of contacting a human being to make an appeal.

For those naive enough to think that the system can be fixed, or that users will keep winning these battles: I have a bridge to sell you.

Who’s nel0x?

I thought we could find them at https://forum.syncthing.net/u/nel0x, but no, it says no such user.

Please see the Google Play release information at https://github.com/Catfriend1/syncthing-android/blob/main/wiki/Switch-between-releases_Verify-APK-is-genuine.md.

Hi, nel0x was just my dev username on GitHub – I usually don’t reuse names on different platforms. But you’re right, it could confuse some. So for any future discussions or threads this will be the account I’ll use here on the forum.

Google is now also in the news or RDM, version 2025.2.0.17

Google has enforced stricter privacy policies, denying us the All Files Access permission for reasons we are trying to figure out. Please refer to the application’s notification screen for more detailed information

Can we find some well-known apps that need to use all file access permissions, jointly submit a joint letter, ask Google to clarify its policies, and file complaints with the EU and the US.

I am not a developer and cannot directly contact some influential people or organizations. Maybe someone in the community can help.
