I also have the same (or, maybe, just a very similar) problem with untrusted Thunderbird directory syncing. Unexpected items appear after a little while, but I can also confirm that I get sync-conflict files on the untrusted side, which shouldn’t be happening at all. The configuration is very simple: laptop → untrusted NAS.
