Just want to clarify that I have this correct, on a LAN behind a NAT router with no port forwarding set up my listen address to 0.0.0.0:8384 allows access to anyone on my LAN but not WAN side ?
Correct!
Small correction: If your router also handles IPv6, it might not actually be doing NAT on that. But then it probably has a firewall which blocks direct IPv6 connections from the WAN to devices on the LAN. Just one more thing to consider when looking at the router settings.

Thank you, I had not thought about ipv6, did some digging and yes apparently they come with state full firewalls. Having said that I have programmed ufw to only allow access on my subnet as belt and braces
