Slow sync sending files from Android

The android application stats appeared to have stopped updating but the file count and total folder size continued to (slowly) increase on the PC side. I stopped the sync and restarted the phone app, then let it finish scanning. It’s now correctly showing the folder stats as image above.

I’ll do a fresh debug APK install. Then:

set things up manually, use TCP//IP:PORT
let it finish scanning the 128GB folder on phone first
accept the folder share on PC
see if speeds are reported accurately/if it slows down immediately

Let me know if you want me to do something specific for the test method.

Side note: While testing some versions of the app (including this debug version), the initial setup wizard navigation buttons are covered by the navbar on my phone.

No worries, I’ve been getting around it by using multiapp windows

Following the steps above, it looks like the problem persists.

There is an initial burst of speed where 7% successfully transfers, then it stops.

Side by side showing 0 transfer speed.

I need to confirm whether it’s actually stalled, or just perceived to be slow due to the transfer stats not updating.

If we look at this progress screenshot, it appears to have transferred 58GB in 20mins - 48MBps?

I have to stop for tonight, I’ll give this a try tomorrow

Confirming the data transfer does actually stall. I did a fresh test using the debug apk. It transfers 20GB~ in a minute, then stops. Full log paste attached.

Apart from Syncthing itself, which had quite a few changes (see https://github.com/syncthing/syncthing/compare/v1.27.12…v1.28.0), there was also a bump in Go version from v1.22 to v1.23.

Hi @Catfriend1, I was not able to test things out due to an medical emergency. When I came back today, I so there has been a lot of testing and feedback done by @zzz-io.

So I decided to try the new test build you provided (https://github.com/Catfriend1/syncthing-android/releases/download/v1.27.12.90/com.github.catfriend1.syncthingandroid.debug_1.27.12.90.apk) and I can say that this is working very well in all aspects including the overlay, scanning speed and transfer speed as well.

I have tried the sync from android to windows and about to test the same for android to android.

I am not exactly sure why is the current version working well

Regarding the v1.9.0, the one I tried was of the non-fork version which did work for me. I haven’t tried your v1.9.0

I hope the last debug build you provided works well for others as it did for me. Moreover, I plan to stay on it because this is the initial sync I’m doing for my new device and once everything is ready, I will switch to the latest stable release.

Once again, thanks for your work on the fork and support in troubleshooting.

That should do it. If something is stalling, it should be visible in the CPU profile.

I couldn’t get the stalling to occur with F-Droid v1.30.0.2. Repeated these steps twice:

PC: v2.0.0-rc.23, Windows (64-bit Intel/AMD)

Android:
- Uninstall existing SyncThing
- Install v1.30.0.2 from F-Droid
- Enable Web UI remote access
- Add shared folder, let it scan (127GB)
- Add PC using QR code

PC:
- Accept prompts for new shared folder
- Navigate to PHONEIP:PORT
- Enable "debugging" under GUI
- Navigate to PHONEIP:PORT/rest/debug/cpuprof
- .pprof automatically downloads

Confused, I try to replicate it using a previously downloaded SLOW apk - v1.28.0.0

Android:
- Uninstall v1.30.0.2
- Install v1.28.0.0 previously downloaded apk
- Add shared folder, let it scan (128GB)
- Add PC using QR code

PC:
- Accept prompts for new device and shared folder

It doesn’t stall. WTF???

The only weird issue was I noticed v1.28 had folder created + PC added even though “keep data” was not ticked when I uninstalled. I tried twice and folder + PC was pre-populated. I had to go to app options > clear data+cache to get a truly ‘fresh’ install.

I’ll clear data+cache, uninstall v1.28.0.0 and install v1.28.01.00 and see if it stalls.

Either your phone is reaaally fast or something in this test case is fishy. That would translate to an average throughput of around 500MB/s (read: megabyte per second). Translated to the more common unit for network related stuff, that would be nearly 4Gb/s.

I was also surprised by this. For the ‘fast’ test cases, including the ones I did last night, it appears to be that fast. I’ll double check the folder size logs.

I even set a different destination directory, thinking Syncthing will ‘restore’ files that are marked for deletion by Windows and no longer visible but not actually overwritten yet.

@Catfriend1 @bt90 Please let me know if either of you have a precise test method you’d like me to try.

Your “problem” is most likely that Syncthing is smart enough to reuse already existing blocks on the receiving side. If your test dataset is a copy of files which are also present in other folders of the node, Syncthing will simply copy the similiar parts locally.

Either use a fresh dataset for these kind of tests or use a temporary Syncthing installation on your PC.

That might be what is happening. What a great feature. I’ve just been sharing my Android:/DCIM/Camera/ folder from my phone and pointing it to a new PC:/Syncthing-Test/DCIM/ folder.

The existing PC:/Syncthing/DCIM/Camera folder has always been there during the tests though, so shouldn’t it have always been grabbing it locally and fast regardless of the Android APK that I was testing?
