Beta test my new iOS app for Syncthing

When adding a folder, you should be able to select a directory outside of the Synctrain container for storage. This has been available in the App Store version for a while now. You may need to tweak file watching/scan interval settings to fit your use case. Also a tip is to use the shortcuts app to automate syncing when you open/close Obsidian.

You are right… For some reason I couldn’t find this properly when on my iPad just now (I blame Stage Manager), but on my iPhone found it immediately. Thanks for the quick response.

I’ll pile on to the App Store country comments by asking if you’d be able to add Japan to the list

I believe there aren’t any extra restrictions in place for Japan so it should hopefully just be a checkbox in App Store Connect!

For what it’s worth, I have an App Store developer account so if it would be helpful I could release the app in additional countries if you’re unwilling or unable to release it outside of the EU. Though probably easier to keep it all under one account of course.

Was able to migrate from Android with few to no issues. Thanks so much for this! With all the interest in such a solution and all these comments and questions, you’re an absolute legend for not only building the app but providing feedback to questions so just wanted to say thanks.

Reposting some important notes for anyone doing ctrl+F for the following:

Files not in Files App (On My Iphone)

  • Synctrain uses Selected files by default
  • If you want to sync entire shares or sub folders, open the folder’s properties and choose “All Files”
  • You can use external Files with a warning. For Logseq and VLC, I had use folders within their restricted app file system. For others, I could just create top level folders.

Downloading in the United States (USA) / Outside the EU:

  • Download TestFlight
  • Use the TestFlight beta link above / in the Github
  • It initially had some trouble getting the download to work but a restart fixed it

Syncing Photos:

  • There is a shortcut linked above (Shortcuts)
  • It’s an iOS shortcut that copies folders from Photos to Files
  • You will need to review it.
  • For example, I had to change “Recent” to “Recents” (just click on it) as the target for which Album to read.
  • I also had to create an “Ingested” Album to track what’s been moved from Photos to Files
  • Look at the Created Folders for the two Videos/Files blocks to choose where you want to the Photos content to be copied to
  • This is one way for now and a stop gap until changes to Syncthing core are made which would allow a custom FS, which could be a while.

One additional note is I was able to get Synctrain over Tailscale working as well

Good overview :+1: note that the photo exporting shortcut is not needed anymore (unless you want to do something more specific by customizing the shortcut of course) as Synctrain contains functionality now to export photos from a specific album to a specific folder (optionally even periodically in the background). I am considering implementing direct sync from Photos but it requires a change in Syncthing core.

Also the app is now available in Australia and Japan app stores. I will add more countries once I have had the time to review their requirements.

It would be great if support for Chinese could be added. At the same time, I hope this program can be listed on the Apple Store in China. I would be very willing to pay for it.

Hi, I tried the shortcut to add photos but can someone please make it understandable for dummies? i have no tech knowledge. Thanks in Advance

Please try the photo sync function that is in the app itself now (under settings) and see if it works for you.

The shortcut was there before this functionality was introduced, and should only really be used as a template for users that have more advanced needs now.

Thank you for taking the time to create this app. I’d really like an opportunity to join the beta. It looks like I’m not able to download it through the app store in the USA. Would it be possible to use the app?

Try the TestFlight link: Join the Synctrain beta - TestFlight - Apple

The app has been out of beta for a while now - compliance for US needs to be figured out still before I can release it on the US App Store as well.

This is actually sick. I am currently beta testing the app, it is fantastic. I really hope you release it soon for other regions (I have 80 days lol).

I don’t mind there being a small fee for it either. The interface is really cool and slick (like all apple apps), so I really wish that it comes out soon.

Beautiful app, I created a shortcut to copy only new photos from the Photos app to my PC and its working great.

I don’t know if its possible, but if somehow Synctrain was able to notify in shortcuts whether it is connected to a device or not to trigger the loop in my shortcut, that would make the shortcut perfect.

I assume my previous reply got lost in the thread, but this is still an issue and I would be happy to privately send and logs you need.

Please give me access

Responding a couple of years later, this app has improved greatly compared to two years ago. I see now devices connect much faster
